Regular Polysemy in WordNet

چکیده
The importance of describing regular polysemy in a lexicon has often been outlined, especially in the field of natural language processing (for a good overview of this issue, see (Ravin and Leacock, 2000)). Unfortunately, no existing broad-coverage semantic lexicon has been built following this relatively recent advice. And since producing a broad coverage semantic lexicon is a very time-consuming task, one has to put this idea into practice on existing lexicons. WordNet is an appropriate lexical semantic ressource for running this experiment as it is machine readable and has a wide coverage (Fellbaum, 1998). In this paper, we introduce a method to create regular polysemy patterns from WordNet data and to automatically detect their occurrences in the lexicon. WordNet is structured as a hierarchy of synsets (sets of lexical units that are synonyms), representing lexical concepts. These concepts are linked by several kinds of semantic relations (hyperonymy, meronymy, antonymy, etc.). Each synset is also described by a lexicographic definition, as illustrated below (we denote by L#i the i lexical unit of a polysemic word in WordNet) :

Dense Components in the Structure of Wordnet
This paper introduces a test-pattern named a dense component for checking inconsistencies in the hierarchical structure of a wordnet. Dense component (viewed as substructure) points out the cases of regular polysemy in the context of multiple inheritance. Definition of the regular polysemy is redefined – instead of lexical units there are used lexical concepts (synsets). All dense components ar...
متن کاملPolysemy and Category Structure in WordNet: An Evidential Approach
While polysemy is a form of ambiguity that can complicate natural language processing, it is also a rich lexical resource that yields useful insights into the mapping between words and concepts. WordNet, a comprehensive lexical knowledge-base of English word meanings, is replete with instances of polysemy, but also contains many instances of homonymy, and fails to distinguish between both kinds...
متن کاملIncremental Knowledge Acquisition from WordNet and EuroWordNet
This paper describes the process of the creation and extraction of implicit knowledge from WordNet (Fellbaum, 1998) and EuroWordNet (Vossen, 1998). This knowledge is an extension of the explicit knowledge structures already provided by the wordnets in the form of synsets and semantic relations, and is contained both within (Euro)WordNet’s hierarchical structure and the glosses that are associat...
متن کاملGraph-Based, Supervised Machine Learning Approach to (Irregular) Polysemy in WordNet
This paper presents a supervised machine learning approach that aims at annotating those homograph word forms in WordNet that share some common meaning and can hence be thought of as belonging to a polysemous word. Using different graph-based measures, a set of features is selected, and a random forest model is trained and evaluated. The results are compared to other features used for polysemy ...
متن کاملEnriching WordNet Via Generative Metonymy and Creative Polysemy
Metonymy is a creative process that establishes relationships based on contiguity or semantic relatedness between concepts. We outline a mechanism for deriving new concepts from WordNet using metonymy. We argue that by exploiting polysemy in WordNet we can take advantage of the metonymic relations between concepts. The focus of our metonymy generation work has been the creation of nounnoun comp...
